Boys Development Basketball Program (Ages 6-11)

Boys ages 6-11 are introduced to basketball through three age groups:

  • U8 (birth year 2018-2019)
  • U10 (birth year 2016-2017)
  • U12 (birth year 2014-2015)

No previous basketball experience is required. The focus of the Development Program is on fundamental skills: dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, footwork, and agility.

U8 and U10 Boys Program Overview

Players are not placed on individual teams at this age group.  The focus is on group training and development which includes a weekly 90 minute session on Saturday with one hour of drills followed by half an hour of scrimmages.  This gives players the opportunity to play with different players each week.

Program Details:

  • Program runs from late-September to the beginning of March
  • Weekly 90-minute sessions includes an hour of drills, followed by half an hour of scrimmages
  • Saturdays at schools in Barrhaven, typically in the morning or early afternoon
  • An in-house tournament will be held mid-way through the season and at the end of the season.
  • Each player requires a size 5 basketball.

U12 Boys Program Overview

Players are placed on individual teams with a dedicated coach. The U12 program offers a safe and fun basketball environment, and concentrates on teaching fundamental basketball skills to players who are new to the sport or are interested in playing recreationally. No previous experience is required.

Program Details:

  • Saturdays at schools in Barrhaven
  • Game times may change each week but are typically held between 10:00 am and 6:00pm
  • Referees from NBBA Jr. Referee Program will referee the games and help the players with the rules.
  • An in-house tournament will be held before the December break and playoffs will be scheduled in  March.
  • Each player requires a size 5 basketball.
  • At the beginning of the season the players are placed on a team of 10-12 players and assigned a coach. Each Saturday the team will either practice for 90 minutes or will play a game against another U12 development team.
  • U12 games are 8 shifts of 4 minutes each (stop time), with equal participation (see Club Policies).
  • The club organizes a Mid-Year Tournament (before the December break) and playoffs at the end of the season around March.
  • When establishing U12 teams, the NBBA has a policy of ensuring that teams are evenly balanced, ensuring the best playing experience for players. The NBBA is therefore unable to take friend, car-pooling or playing time/location requests.
